For me reading poems about being the mom of a child with special needs has really helped me along this journey. Especially when I have felt very alone poems have comforted me. Poems that I have come across on the internet or that friends have sent me have brought me to tears on many occasions.
These tears have come as a result of the ability of the author to articulate in a beautiful way the emotions, thoughts, and feelings that often accompany being the mom of a child with special needs. Taking a moment out of the busyness of the day to read some of these poems often helps me when I am feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, or during times where I feel particularly isolated.
The Pediatric Stroke Network has compiled several inspirational poems on one page here. My personal favorite is “The Special Mother” by Erma Bombeck.
Another poem that has brought me comfort is by April Vernon called “Special Needs Mom: A Look Inside.”
If you have a moment to read any of these poems I pray that they bring you comfort and inspiration as you navigate through this journey.
